The Steelers ended their rookie minicamp with a closed session yesterday. Much of the attention this weekend was on the sixth round draft choice, quarterback Will Howard of Ohio State. Coach Mike Tomlin said Howard’s first test was huddle management, demonstrating that he could translate a play call to his teammates efficiently.
The rookie camp featured twenty signed players and 25 tryouts, with a few of them veterans with limited or no playing time in the NFL. Tomlin says undrafted free agents can be intriguing prospects.
The Steelers have signed veteran running back Trey Sermon after he attended rookie minicamp. He was a 49ers third round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2021 and also played for the Eagles before playing the last two seasons for the Colts.
Next up for the Steelers are the Organized Team Activities – the OTAs – which are scheduled for May 27th to the 29th and June 3rd through the 5th. After that, it’s mandatory minicamp June 10th through the 12th.
The Steelers have signed six of their seven draft choices, with only top pick Derrick Harmon left to sign a contract.
