A new distracted driving law takes effect in Pennsylvania on June 5th.
Paul Miller’s Law makes it illegal to use a hand-held phone while driving, even if you’re stopped at a red light or in traffic. The law builds on Pennsylvania’s current texting ban, which already prohibits sending or reading messages while a vehicle is in motion. Starting June 5th, drivers caught using a hand-held device can receive a written warning, and beginning June 6th of next year, police will start issuing citations for violations.
The law is named after Paul Miller, who was killed in a distracted driving crash. It’s part of Governor Shapiro’s broader push to improve safety on Pennsylvania roads.
PennDOT, State Police, the Turnpike Commission, and other state agencies are urging drivers to put their phones down and focus on the road.
