Arline M. Calhoun, 98, of Indiana, died Wednesday, May 28, 2025 surrounded by her family. Born on May 23, 1927 in Grassflat, PA, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. and Elin (Eld) Bengston. Arline was the wife of the late Murray W. Calhoun.
She had an extensive career as a Registered Nurse, starting as a school nurse for Marion Center School District and working in the emergency, pediatric, and other departments at Indiana Hospital. Arline later retired from the IUP Health Center.
Arline enjoyed playing cards in various card clubs and loved playing bingo at the local halls throughout Indiana County.
She loved her Swedish heritage and was known for her Swedish Rye Bread and Swedish traditions. Most of all, Arline loved cooking, baking, and spending time with her family and friends.
She was a long-standing member of Zion Lutheran Church, Indiana, most recently a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Apollo. She greatly valued the love and support shown to her by the members of First Evangelical Church.
Arline is survived by her children: Sandra Duncan, of Shelocta; James (Christine) Calhoun, of Monroe, NC; Gregory Calhoun, of Harrison City; and Christopher (Jamie Shiring) Calhoun, of Indiana. She will be missed by her grandchildren: Michael (Sydney) Calhoun, of Charlotte, NC; Valerie (Sean) Stevenson, of McDonald; and Nathan Calhoun, of Johnstown; and great-grandson: Andrew B. Calhoun. Also survived by her brother: Clarence Bengston, of Bethlehem; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was proceeded in death by her sister: Agnes Bengston; her brothers: Paul, Carl, and William Bengston; and son in law: Gary Duncan.
Friends will be received on Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 10:00 until 11:00 at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home & Crematory, (965 Phila. St.) in Indiana. A memorial service will follow with Pastor Micah McMillen officiating.
