Many schools have wrapped up for the year this week, but for the Indiana School District, this was the last day for one of the district’s elementary schools.
Students, teachers, staff, and community members gathered today for the official decommissioning of Horace Mann Elementary School with a remembrance ceremony. The building was originally commissioned in 1908. Originally called the Second Ward building, it had classes for elementary and secondary students. It also served as a high school on two different stints before it served all elementary grades and then later on, only fourth and fifth graders.
Horace Mann teacher Linda Medvetz spoke about what made the school special.
Last June, the Indiana School Board voted unanimously to move all fourth and fifth grade students to Eisenhower, which will open next school year. The Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana will take some of the artifacts for preservation. A part of the building remains leased out to Merakey, but the ultimate fate of Horace Mann remains with the school board.
