Today is June 1st, the day the new Penelec “Price to Compare” rates take effect, lifting the average customer’s monthly bill by fourteen to sixteen dollars, based on usage of one-thousand kilowatt hours per month. It’s a 5.1 percent increase. The rate is re-calculated every six months, making it effective through November 30th. It jumps from 10.474 cents per kilowatt hour to 11.003 cents. A year ago, the Price to Compare was 9.74 cents per kilowatt hour.
The higher charge reflects the actual cost of generating electricity, and with the energy supply drastically reduced in Pennsylvania over the last five years, the cost goes up.
Penelec serves 31 counties in western and central Pennsylvania.
