Paul Skenes had his third straight subpar outing and the Pirates dropped the series finale in Milwaukee yesterday afternoon. Joe Block has the story.
Skenes said the Brewers made good but weak contact in the second inning, and the hits just fell in.
Skenes says he has to do a better job of pitching deeper into games.
The Pirates are off today and start a three-game series with the Mets at PNC Park tomorrow night at PNC Park.
The weekly injury report from senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk included updates on a number of pitchers:
- Ryan Borucki has a sore lower back. He’s begun light activity and will be reassessed tomorrow, when he may begin a throwing program.
- Jared Jones will begin general strength and range-of-motion exercises on his surgically-repaired elbow next week.
- Johan Oviedo threw a simulated game this week in Florida and may throw a side session before the team maps out a rehab assignment schedule.
- Colin Holderman threw a simulated game this week and should be ready for a rehab assignment soon.
- Tim Mayza and Justin Lawrence are both throwing from 75 to 80 feet and may soon progress to 90 to 95 feet.
- Tomczyk also said catcher Endy Rodriguez is doing low-level strengthening and range-of-motion on his injured elbow.
The MLB Draft is July 13th and 14th and the Pirates are once again going to be “sellers.” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports the Pirates and Cubs have had talks about Mitch Keller and the Cubs are also interested in David Bednar. Two weeks ago, Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggested the Cubs have also inquired about pitcher Andrew Heaney. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is another frequently-mentioned trade target for several contenders, including the Yankees, who reportedly are interested in re-acquiring the infielder.
