Earlier this week, the state House of Representatives passed a bill that would ban Artificial Intelligence from being used in political ads.
House Bill 811 would ban AI impersonation in any form of media for campaign advertisements, including text, images, video and sound that would “establish, resemble or represent an individual in a way that did not occur in reality” without the person’s consent. Violators of generating AI “deepfakes” within 90 days of an election would go to court and face civil liability and potential court penalties.
The bill passed unanimously, including affirmative votes from State Representatives Jim Struzzi and Brian Smith. It is headed to the senate for further consideration. A similar bipartisan bill was sent out in 2024 by the Senate but no action was taken on it.
