The NHL released the opening night matchups for the upcoming season, and predictably, the Penguins will face their former coach Mike Sullivan of the New York Rangers, at Madison Square Garden on October 7th. The league will highlight the game, televising it on ESPN, with faceoff shortly after 8 PM.
The Penguins/Rangers game will be one of three on opening night, preceded by a five o’clock faceoff for the Chicago Blackhawks against two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida. The nightcap game will be Colorado at the LA Kings.
The complete schedule will be announced at one o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
The Penguins will again play in the Prospect Challenge hosted by the Buffalo Sabres before the start of training camp in September. The other four teams will be the Sabres, Boston Bruins, Columbus Blue Jackets, and New Jersey Devils.
The Pens will play the Bruins on September 12th, the Blue Jackets on the 14th, and the Sabres on the 15th. They won’t play the Devils.
