There is still no announced Republican candidate to challenge incumbent Governor Josh Shapiro next year, but the man who lost to Shapiro in 2022 seems to be inching closer to making another run. State Senator Doug Mastriano is polling his social media followers, asking which logo his campaign should use, all of them variations that contain the words, “Doug Mastriano for Governor”.
The Democrat Shapiro outpolled Mastriano in 2022, 56.5 percent to 41.7 percent. It was the largest margin of victory by a non-incumbent candidate for governor in Pennsylvania since 1946. While Shapiro captured the popular vote and the most populous counties by far, Mastriano actually won fifty counties versus Shaprio’s seventeen.
Congressman Dan Meuser last week announced that he will not run for governor. State Treasurer Stacy Garrity has said that she is considering it and a decision is coming “very soon.”
