Bipartisan support is growing for a bill to abolish the death penalty in Pennsylvania.
House Bill 888, introduced by Rep. Russ Diamond, would remove capital punishment as a sentencing option while leaving the rest of the Pennsylvania Criminal Code unchanged.
Though no vote is scheduled, advocates say the bill marks major progress. The state’s death penalty moratorium, started under Gov. Tom Wolf, remains in place under Gov. Josh Shapiro. A similar bill passed a House committee last session.
Supporters also point to the high cost of capital trials compared to life sentences.
