The Pirates scraped out another win yesterday, completing their first road sweep of a series this year. Joe Block has the recap of another pitching gem against the Giants.
Manager Don Kelly says Jack Suwinski’s 10-pitch walk and Davis’s comebacker were key to the win.
Starter Mike Burrows dueled Giants’ All-Star Logan Webb to a draw, and then the Pirates’ bullpen took over. Burrows likes the way the relief corps works.
The Pirates are off today – the most nervous day of the year – with the Major League trade deadline at 6 PM. Before the game yesterday, they traded long-time third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Reds for 20-year-old Low-A shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura and veteran relief pitcher Taylor Rogers, who will probably be traded again today without ever putting on a Pirates uniform.
Second baseman Nick Gonzalez says he will miss Hayes.
During the game, the Bucs traded reliever Caleb Ferguson to Seattle for 19-year-old right-handed pitcher Jeter Martinez, who is also playing in Low-A.
General manager Ben Cherington is expected to make multiple deadline trades today.
On the injury front, relief pitcher Ryan Borucki is back with the Pirates after his back injury and rehab. Reliever Chase Shugarts may throw live batting practice next week, coming off a knee injury. Long-term injured relievers Tim Mayza and Justin Lawrence are throwing side sessions and have been sent to the Florida Complex League.
The Pirates open a three-game series in Colorado tomorrow night.
