The Steelers won their final preseason game last night at Carolina, 19-10, but it may have been costly. Top draft pick Derrick Harmon was carted off the field in the second quarter with a knee injury, characterized by coach Mike Tomlin as a “sprain”. Harmon returned to the sideline in street clothes in the third quarter.
Mason Rudolph started at quarterback and played three series, completing six of eight passes for 68 yards with an interception. Skylar Thompson continued to impress as Rudolph’s replacement, completing eleven of thirteen for 152 yards and a touchdown.
Tomlin was not pleased with the 13 penalties for 104 yards assessed against the Steelers, and there were other problems, too.
Tomlin says there is plenty of room for improvement before the season starts.
Roster cutdown day is Tuesday. The season opens in New York against the Jets on September 7th.
