A house fire in Salem Township that was ruled an arson is connected with a suspect who allegedly planted a pipe bomb on a lawnmower last month.
State police say that fire at the property near the intersection of Routes 119 and 22 was set at noon yesterday. By the time crews got there, the home was fully involved. Saltsburg and Tunnelton fire departments from Indiana County were sent in to help Westmoreland County Crews. Investigators declared the building a total loss.
The structure was a duplex where 54-year-old James Sever used to live. He was evicted in June and had a confrontation with the landlord. Police believe that on July 20th, Sever placed a pipe bomb on a riding lawnmower belonging to the landlord that exploded when he tried to move it forward. The victim was able to jump off, but the explosion destroyed the mower and sent shrapnel through the garage.
Police have not said that Sever is a suspect in the arson investigation, but a heavy police presence in Salem and in Derry Township will continue to look for him. He is known to frequent the Derry Township/New Alexandria areas and may be riding an E-bike. He is described as six feet tall and weighing about 170 pounds. A $2000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest. If you have seen him, call 911 or call the PSP tips hotline at 1-800-472-8477.
