The Pirates activated Oneil Cruz from the concussion list and he was 0-for-4. To make room for him on the roster, they designated pitcher Andrew Heaney for assignment, after having chosen to keep the pending free agent and instead trade Bailey Falter at the trade deadline last month.
The third game of the four-game series is tonight in St. Louis. The Pirates will use a bullpen game, starting Carmen Mlodzinski (3-7, 3.89 ERA) against Cardinals ace Sonny Gray (12-6, 4.33 ERA). Airtime is 7:20, first pitch at 7:45 on WCCS.
