Paul Skenes lowered his Major League-leading ERA to 1.92 with five more shutout innings last night, but the Pirates dropped yet another game, their 82nd of the season, meaning 2025 is officially a losing season…again. Joe Block has the story from Baltimore.
Bucs manager Donnie Kelly continues to be amazed by Paul Skenes.
With 203 strikeouts, Skenes is just seven behind Mitch Keller’s team record for strikeouts by a right-hander in a season, and 47 behind left-hander Bob Veale’s all-time Pirates record of 250. He enjoys getting the swing-and-miss.
The Pirates had only two hits: the homer by Spencer Horwitz and a single in the eighth by Nick Yorke. Skenes says the Pirates had the chance to win the game last night if they could have come through at the plate.
The series concludes this afternoon at Camden Yards. Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo [2-0, 2.70 ERA] faces Orioles lefty Cade Povich [3-7, 5.16 ERA]. It’s a 12:40 airtime, 1:05 first pitch on WCCS.
Pirates injury news included an update yesterday on outfielder Ronnie Simon’s shoulder. He will have surgery for a torn labrum next month, after the bone heals. Pitcher Jared Jones has received clearance to throw and is playing catch from 45 feet. Jack Suwinski has been sent to Indianapolis to continue his rehab from a groin injury.
