Indiana Borough and State Police are getting ready for increased activity during Homecoming weekend.
State police say their expanded enforcement period will begin today and run through Sunday. They will be aided by other state police stations in the Troop A area, along with the Tactical Mounted Section and Canine Unit, the Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement and other resources. As the mounted unit will be in the area, people are reminded that it is against the law to “intentionally or knowingly taunt, torment, tease, beat, kick or strike a police animal.” Those who do so could face a third-degree felony charge.
Indiana Borough Police will also be out in full force. Police Chief Justin Schawl has sent letters to IUP Students, residents and business owners asking them to call 911 if they see anything suspicious. They also ask businesses if they are approached about hosting a private party to get all contact information of the person making the request, ask questions to give you confidence that you are being provided accurate information, and notify the police.
In the letter to students, Schawl said that not every visitor has Indiana Borough’s best interests in mind, and that any rooftop gatherings are illegal.
