IUP moved up a spot to number four in the final Division II Super One Region rankings, released yesterday. The team they’ll play for the PSAC championship on Saturday, Kutztown, is number one for the second week in a row.
On last night’s Hawk Talk on Renda Digital TV and U92 radio, IUP coach Paul Tortorella revealed that his players will be sporting a brand new decal on their helmets, the “JB 600” decal, honoring Jack Benedict for his 600th IUP football game, which will coincide with the championship game.
Tortorella presented Jack with his own IUP helmet to commemorate the occasion.
Turning his attention to the game, Tortorella framed the task ahead of IUP, saying Kutztown has never trailed in a game this season and has not even given up a point in the first quarter of any of its games.
He says Kutztown has dominated recruiting in the eastern half of the state, and has developed an unmistakable pipeline into New Jersey’s football talent pool.
The Super Region One rankings show Kutztown number one followed by Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith who play each other on Saturday for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) title. IUP is fourth, with Cal, Frostburg State, Assumption, and Fayetteville State rounding out the top eight. Slippery Rock and Charleston are numbers nine and ten.
The top four teams after this weekend’s action will host first round games in Super Region One.
The IUP/Kutztown title game for the PSAC championship kicks off at noon Saturday on 92.5 FM, U92.
