There was a lot of in-conference action on area ballfields on Thursday and some exciting out-of-conference play as well. Here’s the roundup:
SOFTBALL
West Shamokin scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and added another run in the sixth for a 4-1 victory over Indiana. Cameron Vandervort had three singles for West Shamokin and Madi Kiern had two. Abbi Kimmel doubled and drove in a run. Leah Mondi gave up four hits and struck out eight with no walks and gave up one unearned run for the win. For Indiana, Samantha Martin gave up six hits and struck out seven, walking just one and giving up two earned runs.
Homer-Center scored three in the first, added four more over the next four innings, then put up seven runs in the sixth for a 14-0 win over River Valley. The Wildcats outhit the Panthers 14-1, with Khylee Beer and Bri Birchall each knocking out three hits, and Bry Haer, Bekah Marshall, and Madison Brendlinger each having two. In the circle, Marshall struck out eleven and gave up just one hit and two walks.
United struck for five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-0 five-inning win over Ferndale. Ella Worthington tossed a no-hitter and walked just one while striking out thirteen. She also had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Preslee Campbell had three hits. Kenedi Fiochetta had two hits, including a homer, and Peyton Thomas and Karrie Yoder also had two hits.
Northern Cambria lost to Moshannon Valley, 7-4. Freshman Quinn Bernecky had two hits with a home run, and Alyssa Yahner and Ava Messina also had two hits for NC.
BASEBALL
Homer-Center scored two runs in each of the first two innings and came away with a 5-2 win over River Valley. Brayden Rado had two hits and Nash Budner drove in two runs for the Wildcats. Cameron Stouffer had two hits for the Panthers. Budner went five-and-a-third innings and struck out eleven for HC.
Colin Dinyar threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out eight while walking one as Conemaugh Township hammered Conemaugh Valley, 13-0. Dinyar was 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and he drove in three runs. Reed Conn had three hits, including a homer, and drove in four runs and Gabriel Valentine had two hits.
A four-run top of the seventh led Purchase Line to a comeback 7-6 win over Portage. Stephen Peruso, Matthew Johnston, Christian Moyer, and Micah Lotson each had two hits for the Red Dragons. Conner Skico and Nathan Phillips both had two hits for the Mustangs.
Northern Cambria’s Reese Wagner went five shutout innings, giving up two hits, and Levi Czar closed it out with two more scoreless innings as the Colts beat Moshannon Valley, 2-0. The two pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts. Five batters each had a hit for the Colts, all singles.
Richland beat Marion Center, 9-2, with Jaxon Davis getting two hits for the Stingers.
Harmony pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge Penns Manor, 8-7.
