BASEBALL
West Shamokin solidified its grip on first place in the Heritage Conference West with a 3-2 win over Homer-Center. Luke McCullough threw six-and-a-third three-hit innings, surrendering one earned run, for the win, with Liam Scrips getting the final two outs for the save. The Wolves had six hits by six different players, with Ben McConnell and Christian Davies-Buffone each driving in runs. For Homer-Center, Brayden Rado and Dom Shimko both doubled and both drove in runs. Shimko took a tough loss on the mound, giving up two earned runs over six innings.
Clayton Burns had three hits and drove in three runs and Troy Slovinsky had two doubles and drove in six as Marion Center beat Penns Manor, 16-6. Max Sunseri and Drew Valazak each had two hits for the Comets.
A seven-run first inning set up River Valley for an 11-6 win over Purchase Line. Hayden Haight had two hits with a homer, and Patrick Hilaire, Eric Dinger, and Anthony Elliott all had two hits for the Panthers. For the Red Dragons, Matthew Johnston and Christian Moyer both homered and Stephen Peruso had two hits.
United bounced Conemaugh Valley, 14-0, in five. Brendan James and Dmitri Worthington each had three hits, Ryan Felix had two hits and four RBIs, and Cole McGinnins had two hits. Connor Darr and James combined on the one-hit shutout.
Conemaugh Township blanked Portage, 5-0, scoring all five runs in the first two innings. Only two of the five runs were earned, thanks to three Portage errors. The Indians had five hits by five different batters, with RBI hits by Bryce Conn, Kaden Valentine, and Brennan Lohr. Portage had five hits, three by freshman Lucas Shuniak. Colin Dinyar and Devin Lohr combined for the shutout for CT.
After taking a loss to Valley on Monday, Indiana turned it around, beating the Vikings, 11-6, yesterday to reclaim a share of first place in the WPIAL 4A Section 3 race. Both teams are 8-2 in the Section, with Indiana at 12-3 overall and Valley at 13-5.
SOFTBALL
West Shamokin scored all of its runs in the first three innings for a 9-4 win over Homer-Center. Abbi Kimmel, Cameron Vandervort, and Leah Mondi all had two hits for the Wolves and Vandervort, Maddi Kiern, and Evie Grantz all drove in two runs. The Wildcats’ Khylee Beer had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs, and Bekah Marshall had two hits.
Conemaugh Valley downed United, 4-0, scoring two runs in the third and single runs in the fifth and seventh. Megan Bilak doubled and homered for the Blue Jays. Ella Worthington had two hits for the Lions, one of them a double.
Portage clobbered Conemaugh Township, 19-1. The Mustangs’ 17-hit attack was led by three hits apiece by Kendall Stancovich, Mikaila McCoy, and Reese Pinizzotto’s three hits. Kiera McCarty and Avery Smith each had two hits, and McCarty homered.
