State police have confirmed that a suspect was killed and an officer was hurt in a police-involved shooting in Indiana Borough Sunday night.
Troopers say that Indiana Borough Police officers were sent to a home in the 100 block of North Cherry Avenue at 7:02 PM for a domestic disturbance. Officers found the suspect, identified only as a man, was brandishing a shovel and threatened the officer with it. He then lead the officer on a chase on foot, but the officer caught up with him. The suspect stabbed the officer multiple times with a knife as he was being detained, and during the struggle, the officer shot and killed the suspect.
The injured officer was taken to IRMC for treatment. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.
State police Troop A’s Major Case Team was called in to handle the investigation. They were assisted by their Forensic Services and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist units. Further assistance was provided by the DA’s office, the county coroner, the EMA office, and police from IUP, Homer City and Blairsville police departments.
