IUP is implementing a new policy concerning E-Scooters and similar electronic devices.
Starting today, the new policy prohibits the use of E-Scooters, E-Skateboards, Hoverboards, Segways, motorized unicycles, or similar transportation devices on IUP property at both the Indiana and Punxsutawney campuses. These devices are also not allowed to be stored or charged on campus property due to the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries that commonly power these machines. The policy does not effect the use of medical personal mobility devices, nor will it be in effect at the IUP facilities at Penn Center East in Pittsburgh.
E-Bikes remain permitted on campus roads and designated bike paths provided that riders comply with all applicable traffic laws and regulations. Charging of E-Bikes on-campus is not allowed, and bikes must be secured on approved outdoor bike racks and are prohibited inside university buildings. Standard motor vehicles, golf carts used for authorized University purposes, and University maintenance equipment are not affected by this policy.
The policy on E-scooters was put in effect with the safety of pedestrians, drivers, and users of these devices in mind.
