Starting today, Pennsylvania Turnpike travelers will see a five percent increase in tolls, but about 84 percent of E-Z Pass users and 74 percent of Toll By Plate trips will have a cut or an increase of under a dollar. Seventy percent of commercial vehicles will have rate increases of five dollars or less.
Also today, Open Road Tolling (ORT) begins east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension of the turnpike, with the new system eventually scheduled to expand to the entire 360-mile toll road. Open Road Tolling uses overhead gantries to automatically read and charge users electronically as they pass beneath at highway speeds. Gantries are already under construction on the western portion of the turnpike ahead of a January 2027 launch.
Open Road Tolling will allow the turnpike to charge by the mile instead of by going interchange to interchange. Customer bills will show each gantry a vehicle passes under during their trip. Toll booths will be removed east of Reading starting this year.
