Just when Pitt needs to pull it all together to make a run for the NCAA Tournament, the Panthers fell apart last night, dropping a 73-57 decision to Virginia at the Petersen Events Center.
Virginia vaulted to a 24-7 lead in the first thirteen minutes of the game, aided by four three-pointers in a 17-0 run and led by sophomore Dai Dai Ames, who scored a career-high 27 points. He was averaging 6.2 points per game before last night.
Panthers coach Jeff Capel took the blame for the loss.
Capel said Pitt didn’t do anything well.
Ish Leggett was the only Panthers in double figures, with 17. Pitt fell to 14-8, 5-6 in the ACC, and will play again on Saturday at North Carolina, a team they beat just last week.
NCAA
Auburn and Duke continue to hold the top two spots in the NCAA coaches poll this week, and in the AP poll too. Alabama, Tennessee, Houston, Florida, Purdue, Iowa State, Michigan State and St. John’s round out the top 10 in the coaches poll. It’s the same top ten in the AP poll, except for Texas A&M holding the tenth spot rather than St. John’s.
