SOFTBALL
Indiana could not solve Hampton pitcher Marissa Snyder, who allowed only a single by Anna Carnavale as Hampton knocked off Indiana 9-0 in the WPIAL Quad-A quarterfinals. Ashley Schick homered for the Talbots and Snyder and Aliza Michielli both tripled.
In the District 6 Class A softball playoffs, Homer-Center scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-1 win over Glendale. Catcher Khylee Beer hit a two-run single and Melanie George followed up with a run-scoring single in the big inning. Bekah Marshall gave up one run on five hits, striking out seven in the complete game effort. George and Taylor Rado each had two hits and Beer drove in three runs and threw out two would-be base stealers. The Wildcats will play at top seed Claysburg-Kimmel on Monday.
Purchase Line scored nine runs in the first two innings and walloped Blacklick Valley 10-0 to advance to play Bishop McCort on Monday. Brooklynn Walker and Addison Buterbaugh both had two hits and Walker and Rylee Mahaffey each drove in two runs. Mahaffey gave up two hits and five walks in the five-inning game and struck out fourteen.
It took ten innings to decide, but Penns Manor will move on to the quarterfinals after walking off Northern Cambria, 8-7. The Comets scored two in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and each team scored a run in the ninth before Penns Manor won it in the tenth. Sydnee Luther had three hits for PM, Joss Bennett had two, and Allie Rhea hit a home run. The Comets take on Conemaugh Valley on Monday.
Juniata Valley routed Portage, 12-0.
BASEBALL
In Class A, Bishop Guilfoyle’s Michael Cacciotti tossed a one-hitter and struck out twelve as the Marauders rumbled over Purchase Line, 9-1. Guilfoyle will take on top seeded Northern Cambria on Monday.
Claysburg-Kimmel pummeled Portage, 9-0, to advance to a Monday quarterfinal game against Homer-Center.
Conemaugh Valley edged Harmony, 2-1, and will play at Blacklick Valley on Monday.
In Triple-A, West Shamokin scored three runs in the first inning, saw Richland rally to tie the game at 4 in the fourth, then scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth to get by the Rams, 8-5. Vince Harkleroad and JJ Cessna each had two hits for the Wolves, Gunnar Shoop doubled and drove in two runs and Max Long had two RBIs. West Shamokin will play at top seed Forest Hills on Monday.
LACROSSE
Top seeded South Fayette got six goals from Drew Welhorsky as they defeated Indiana, 17-4, in the AA quarterfinals.
