The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is offering $1.2 million in grants to improve school bus safety across the state.
The new School Bus Safety Grant Program is funded through fines from drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses. Each $300 fine generates $25 for the grant program, which helps fund safety training, education, and licensing costs for school bus drivers. Last year alone, over 24,000 violations were recorded through the state’s automated school bus enforcement program. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll says the program is part of Governor Shapiro’s ongoing commitment to safe transportation for every Pennsylvanian.
Schools, bus contractors, and municipalities can apply online from June 2 through July 3 at PennDOT’s website.
