Thomas R. Smith of Holidaysburg received his masters from IUP in secondary counselor education in 1976, completing the degree program while working as a math teacher at Tussey Mountain Junior-Senior High School. He also was a school counselor at Altoona High School for 31 years before recently retiring.
Smith said he was pleased to help out the proposed college and that his education at IUP provided him additional career opportunities and a lengthy career in the education field.
Smith’s $50,000 gift means that the university has secured $34.3 million in private and government funding for the initiative.
