A Blairsville man who pleaded guilty to charges in the death of an infant who fell from his van last August is due in Indiana County Court today for a sentencing hearing.
Court documents show 23-year-old Rony Alfredo Gomez Lopez will go before Judge Michael Clark today for the sentencing hearing that was moved from June 16th. Gomez Lopez admitted guilt to charges of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, simple assault, resisting arrest, evading arrest, reckless endangerment and DUI for the incident on August 25th, 2024.
On that day, Blairsville police were alerted to a woman and an infant jumping from a moving vehicle. Police said the woman and the infant fell out of the vehicle while he was punching her as the door was not fully shut. As they received treatment from Citizens’ Ambulance personnel, Gomez Lopez pulled up in the van, and police started to pursue him. The chase ended when his van hit a retaining wall along East Brown Street. He got out and tried to run away, but officers used a taser to subdue him. The infant later died at a Pittsburgh hospital.
