Both the state house and senate have the weekend off before resuming activities on Monday, which happens to be the deadline for the Pennsylvania Budget.
Senator Pittman has said throughout the budget season that he felt the budget would not be ready in time. In an interview this week on Indiana in the Morning, Pittman addressed some concerns that Governor Josh Shapiro’s budget would pass as presented, but he said the Senate Republicans are not on board with it.
State Representative Jim Struzzi, who is the Republican Party leader on the state appropriations committee, said that the state is “barreling toward a fiscal cliff and Governor Josh Shapiro is at the wheel”. He is proposing a package of bills called the Pennsylvania Prosperity Plan, which will focus on three areas:
- Unleashing the state’s energy industry so it can grow
- Support efficient government
- Support student-centered education.
While the fiscal year ends June 30th, Pittman has said that the state will continue to function without a budget the next day and for the immediate future, and state employees will continue to be paid.
