PennDOT is notifying state residents of a scam that mentions the RealID verification process.
Fraudulent text messages are being sent out from people claiming to be with the state agency or the federal Department of Homeland Security asking people to click on a link and provide personal and payment information by scanning and uploading pictures of documents needed for a RealID using either a home scanner or their cell phone camera.
Currently, that process does not exist and PennDOT will never accept any identity documents via email, text message or over the internet for any reason. Any such requests may be for fraudulent purposes. The only way to get documents certified is to go to a PennDOT Driver’s License Center or a RealID Center and have the documents scanned there.
If you have fallen victim to this, contact the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office immediately. For more information on this scam, you can visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website.
