Derry Borough Council last night approved a modified schedule for the community pool that was facing staffing issues.
During the council meeting, the board decided to go to a schedule that would keep the pool open every day except Monday, which is their slowest day out of the week. Last week, it was announced that borough leaders would discuss closing the pool due to staffing issues with their lifeguards. Currently, six lifeguards work the pool, but because of the recent heat wave, the pool saw a surge in attendance and was forced to close because there were not enough lifeguards for the number of people on the property.
Along with the six-day-a-week schedule, council also approved raises for the lifeguards and reimbursing the cost of lifeguard certification and recertification. This was due to a $3500 donation made to the community pool. Also, season passholders are being given the option to be refunded since the pool was closed a few days this season. Those who want to keep the membership will be given a 10% discount on purchases at the concession stand.
