An original inductee to the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame and the last living member of the first Baltimore Orioles team in 1954 has died.
Bill Hunter passed away July 1st at the age of 97. A Punxsutawney native, He played baseball for several Indiana County Leagues including the Ward League, and also played baseball and football for Indiana State Teachers College (now IUP) he was playing with the St. Louis Browns when the team had to relocate due to competition from the St. Louis Cardinals. He was later traded to the New York Yankees and spent two years with them, including a world championship series win in 1956. He also played with the Kansas City Athletics and with Cleveland before ending his career in 1958. He played in 630 games.
He would return to the O’s as a coach before managing the Texas Rangers for a season and a half before taking the head coaching job at Towson State University in 1979 then becoming the athletic director in 1984, positions he held until the mid-90’s. He was also inducted into the IUP Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
