State Representative Jim Struzzi and Senator Joe Pittman have announced that more than $7 million will come to Indiana County through the PENNVEST program.
The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority said that Indiana Borough would receive a low-interest loan of $4.8 million for a construction project at the wastewater treatment plant. The money will be used to build a new pavilion-style roof over the headworks facility, replacing four raw sewage grinders with two parallel fine-screen units, and the replacement of the existing chain-and-bucket grit collection system with a modernized equivalent. Burrell Township’s sewer authority will receive a grant of just over $2 million and a loan of over $830,000 to upgrade the Volks, Socialville and Strangford pump stations.
In a joint statement, Pittman called clean, safe and reliable water “vital for the well-being of our communities,” and that the money will go a long way towards making the needed upgrades. Struzzi said he was pleased to support both projects, as “funding necessary infrastructure for our community is a top priority.”
PENNVEST financing is provided through the use of federal funds and prior bond issues by the state, along with proceeds from the Marcellus Shale Impact Fee Legislation.
