On his first pass of the first practice of Steelers training camp, Aaron Rodgers threw an interception. He said afterward that it was good to get that out of the way.
Rodgers and his new teammates took the field at St. Vincent College in 90-degree heat yesterday, and there was plenty for coach Mike Tomlin to see. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s first practice as a Steelers featured the three-time All-Pro playing both free safety and slot corner. New tight end Jonnu Smith and veteran running back/return man Cordarrelle Patterson both watched from the sidelines, although Tomlin said there were no significant injuries and only some “heat issues” for the team. Guard Isaac was out with a soft tissue injury.
Tomlin says the Steelers embraced working in the heat.
Tomlin reiterated that he will regulate the amount of practice time Rodgers gets throughout training camp.
The coach said Rodgers and the other new Steelers will learn the Steelers’ way in training camp.
Rodgers says he’s had a good time fitting in with the Steelers, even though his work with his new teammates has been extremely limited.
Rodgers is known for using his tight ends a lot, and he says he has a good group of them to work with.
Rodgers says the Steelers might not be viewed as a Super Bowl contenders by others, but he thinks they have a real chance.
New Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf is Rodgers’ suite-mate at St. Vincent. He says building chemistry with his quarterback is important.
Metcalf plans to take as much as he can from Rodgers’ twenty years of experience in the NFL.
Metcalf says playing against Jalen Ramsey and the Steelers’ defense in training camp is going to be fun.
