Over 20 fire companies from Westmoreland, Indiana, and Armstrong Counties were on the scene yesterday for a fire at a home in Vandergrift.
The fire was first reported in the 8:00 AM hour on Friday in the 400 block of Emerson Street. While firefighters responded quickly, the efforts were stalled as about 20,000 rounds of ammunition went off as crews entered the home. Firefighters had to wait for about 10 minutes before the final rounds discharged. The first floor of the house had mostly smoke damage. The upper floors took on the most damage.
The cause remains unknown, but officials from the Vandergrift fire department said the fire began in the rear of the house on the third floor. No injuries were reported. Three people in the house were evacuated.
