Sportsnet.ca reports that Chicago-based billionaire David Hoffman is attempting to buy the Penguins and has offered about $1.75 billion for them to the Fenway Sports Group. That far surpasses the supposed offers made by former Pens owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. The Hoffman Family of Companies owns several dozen companies, including media businesses.
Fenway still says it is only seeking a minority partner and is not looking to sell the team. Hoffman already owns the Florida Everblades of the ECHL.
