Cam Heyward was among yesterday’s limited practice participants for the Steelers. He’d been conducting a “hold in” during training camp. Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that Heyward did participate in team drills for the first time since the first week of camp.
Tomlin also said that linebacker Alex Highsmith, wide receiver Calvin Austin III, and cornerback Donte Kent all practiced yesterday along with “others” whom he did not name.
The coach says players are eager to show their stuff in tomorrow’s final preseason game at Carolina.
Tomlin said Heyward, TJ Watt, Aaron Rodgers, and DK Metcalf will not suit up in Carolina, but everybody else is expected to play, depending on whether or not Carolina uses its starters.
Tomlin wants to see how his secondary and offensive line play, especially how they communicate with each other.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he’s ready to go when called upon.
Rodgers says it was good to see Calvin Austin back on the practice field.
After missing most of the offseason drills, Rodgers says training camp has given him a chance to get comfortable with his teammates, and they’re building camaraderie.
The Steelers yesterday signed outside linebacker Kenny Willekes, a former Michigan State star who hasn’t found his way in the NFL since being named Big Ten defensive lineman of the year in 2018. He takes the roster spot of offensive lineman Gareth Warren, who was waived/injured.
