The Steelers play their final preseason game tonight, visiting the Carolina Panthers. There will be plenty of candidates for roster spots trying to impress Mike Tomlin and the Steelers’ front office.
The one starting position still undecided is punter, where Cam Johnston is coming back from reconstructive knee surgery and Corliss Williamson, who replaced Johnston after the injury in Week One last year, have both had solid camps.
Tomlin sounds like that job is still up for grabs, and tonight’s game might make the difference.
One possible factor in deciding the punting job: Johnston would cost the Steelers about $2.3 million, and $400,000 against the salary cap.
The Steelers may have a decision to make on their long snapper. Christian Kuntz suffered a chest injury last week. His status for tonight is unknown.
Teams have until Tuesday at 1 PM to cut their rosters to 53 players.
