Firefighters from Westmoreland and Indiana Counties were called in to fight a fire at a home and day care facility in Derry Township yesterday morning.
The first call went out just before 11 AM for a reported house fire with possible entrapment on Wood Street. The flames spread from a home to a separate building behind it on the property that housed Dornie and Lori’s House Day Care. No injuries were reported, and everyone was able to get out safely, but both buildings were destroyed. Two people said they heard explosions before the fire started.
Black Lick and Blairsville fire departments were sent at 11:08 to assist Westmoreland County fire crews. Homer City and Coral-Graceton fire departments were put on standby detail about an hour later.
It’s believed the fire started on the back porch, but the exact cause has not been released. State police fire marshals are investigating.
