In the final round of the WPIAL 3A championship yesterday, Indiana’s Austin Schawl shot an 11-over par 81 to finish in 16th place over the two rounds, missing out on advancing into the state tournament by two strokes. Teammate Drew Brocious was two strokes in back of Schawl and finished in 20th. Fox Chapel’s Carson Kitsley won the tournament at eight under, six strokes better than Latrobe’s Jack Sacriponte.
The final round of the District 6 2A golf championship is today at Sinking Valley in Altoona, with two-time defending champion Alex Talmadge of West Shamokin holding a one-stroke lead over Richland’s Wesley Dunlap. Other Heritage Conference golfers who advanced into the championship round today include River Valley’s Jake Pynos, who is tied for third at four over and teammate Jeremy Reed, tied for seventh at seven over. River Valley’s Brady Doak is at eleven over, tied for 19th, and Homer-Center’s Brayden Rado sits 12 over and is tied for 22nd.
BOYS SOCCER
Cambria Heights beat United for the second time in a week, 5-0. The Highlanders scored three times in the first half, with goals by Nito Kutruff, Stevie Stevens, and Nate Conaway. Conaway connected in the second half as well, and Andrew Smithmyer capped the scoring. Heights is 8-2-2 and United fell to 1-9-1.
GIRLS SOCCER
Cambria Heights edged Central Cambria 2-1 in overtime. The Red Devils’ opened the scoring with a goal by Kadence Sinclair in the first half, which was answered by the Highlanders’ Autumn Groer later in the half. After a scoreless second half, Morgan Ross scored the game-winner for Heights at 4:31 in the overtime. Heights is 9-2 while Central Cambria fell to 4-8.
Franklin Regional topped Indiana, 7-0.
