An Altoona man who went missing as he was flying his ultra-light aircraft in Indiana County was killed when his plane crashed yesterday.
State police confirmed 75-year-old David Edward Wittmer was discovered less than a mile from where it took off in Young Township. He reportedly was practicing some touch-and-go landings when he took off and never returned around 6:00 last night. The search for him resumed this morning after last night’s efforts were unsuccessful. A member of the State Police aviation patrol unit found the plane crashed in a corn field along Coal Run Road. First responders were sent to the scene and found Wittmer’s remains.
The Indiana County Coroner’s office is assisting state police. Police say there was no foul play and troopers are investigating it as an accidental death. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified.
