One person was hurt yesterday in a fire at an apartment at the intersection of Maple Street and Wayne Avenue.
Indiana, Homer City, Creekside, and Coral-Graceton fire departments were sent out around 2:00 yesterday afternoon along with the county Emergency Management Agency, Citizen’s Ambulance and Indiana Borough Police to the scene. Fire officials said that heavy smoke was seen coming out of a second-floor bedroom window. Crews were able to make a quick attack and contain the fire to that room. Only that room and its contents were damaged by the fire, but other areas were affected by smoke and water.
Six people were displaced, including one IUP student. The student is getting help from the University while the others are being assisted by Alice Paul House. Indiana Borough Police reported one non-IUP student was hurt and was taken to IRMC for treatment.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and it was deemed suspicious in nature. State Police fire marshals and the Indiana County District Attorney’s office are assisting with the investigation.
