Indiana Regional Medical Center has announced that it has acquired and put into place a new robotic surgical system, making the hospital the first in Western Pennsylvania to use it.
The da Vinci 5 surgical system is the newest generation of these systems, which will give surgeons more precision, control and autonomy in the operating room. It gives doctors a 3-D high-definition view and finely tuned instruments which will allow them to perform complex procedures through very small incisions. There is also a system that will allow the surgeon in the operating room to consult with another surgeon anywhere in the world.
IRMC President and CEO Steve Wolfe said that introducing the new system is “an important step in our commitment to provide the best possible care for our patients close to home,” and that the precision the system can bring faster recoveries and better outcomes. Director of minimally invasive surgery Dr. Dan Clark said it will give the doctors a clearer view of the procedures and the telepresence feature will open the door for real-time learning and mentoring.
