Both State Senator Joe Pittman and Representative Jim Struzzi last week spoke before the Board of Directors of the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce about the safety of pedestrians on Philadelphia Street in downtown Indiana. Pittman pledged to do whatever he could to improve the efficiency of downtown crosswalks and Struzzi told the board that “there are opportunities for improvement to make that roadway safer for pedestrians.”
Struzzi noted that PennDOT has completed its study of crosswalk safety issues, which was initiated after two pedestrians were struck and killed by a truck in March. Two pedestrians were also killed when they were hit by a bus on Philadelphia Street last month. The PennDOT report will be introduced at Tuesday’s meeting of Indiana Borough Council.
At that same Chamber board meeting, Byron Stauffer Jr., the executive director of the Indiana County Development Corporation and the Office of Planning & Development, reported that the Indiana County Regional Development Conference will be held November 13th at the Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort and Conference Center, with discussion about how communities can take advantage of opportunities created by the coming of the Homer City Energy Campus.

Stauffer also said that a number of manufacturers who are anticipating growth and expansion have been involved in building acquisitions, renovations, and new equipment purchases.
