IUP is ranked fifth in the initial Super Region One numerical rankings, with undefeated Kutztown number one, followed by Virginia Union, Johnson C. Smith, and Assumption. Cal U., Slippery Rock, and Frostburg State make up slots six through eight, with Fayetteville State and Charleston (West Virginia) in the ninth and tenth spots. The top eight teams will make the Super Region One playoffs, with the final ranking due next Monday.
IUP is 6-2 heading into this Saturday’s key PSAC West game at 6-3 Clarion, and coach Paul Tortorella is well aware that the Golden Eagles can play good – and sometimes great -football.
On Hawk Talk last night on U92 Radio and Renda Digital TV, Tortorella said Clarion’s offense is the best he’s seen this season, able to adjust to whatever a defense throws at it. He said the defense is “really sound” and make few mistakes, and their special teams do a good job.
Tortorella says Clarion is a tough matchup.
Tortorella says IUP is focused on Clarion, not on the Super Region One rankings.
With a win at Clarion, IUP would play Kutztown for the PSAC championship.
