The Penguins have confirmed a five-player trade with Edmonton, sending two-time All-Star goaltender Tristan Jarry and former first round draft pick Sam Poulin to the Oilers in exchange for goaltender Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round draft choice.
Skinner and Kulak are both in the final year of their contracts, with Skinner carrying a $2.6 million salary cap hit to Pittsburgh and Kulak a $2.7 million hit. Jarry’s salary cap hit is $5.375 million and Poulin’s is $775,000.
Skinner has taken Edmonton to the Stanley Cup finals two years in a row, but the Oilers have lost both times. This season, he is 11-8-4 with a 2.83 goals-against average and an .891 save percentage.
Kulak is averaging 17:42 of ice time this year in 31 games, and has two assists. He’s a minus-7 this season. Over 12 seasons in the NHL, he is a career minus-1 in 611 games.
Jarry was in goal last night for the Pens in their 4-2 loss to Montreal. He is 9-3-1 record with a 2.66 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. He missed seven games last month with a lower body injury. In ten seasons, he was 161-100 for the Penguins with 32 of those losses coming in shootouts.
Jarry played parts of four junior hockey seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League.
Poulin has appeared in two NHL games and gone scoreless this season. With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he was the leading scorer with 9 goals and 11 assists in 22 games this season.
