A new study says natural gas power plants such as the one being built at the site of the former Homer City Generating Station are the leading industry response to the energy demands of AI data centers, and Pennsylvania ranks third in the nation in developing them.
The Global Energy Monitor report says Texas is first by far, making up about a third of all new gas-fired power plants in America. Louisiana is second, followed by Pennsylvania, where 8.8 gigawatts of new gas-fired energy is in development. The power plant at Homer City Redevelopment accounts for exactly half of all of the new gas-powered energy production in the commonwealth.
The report warns that the rapidly increasing demand is creating delays in acquiring the transformers and turbines needed to complete the projects. GE Vernova, which is scheduled to supply seven large turbines to power the plant in Homer City, last month announced that it has an 83-gigawatt backlog in its gas power business, and is increasing production at its U.S. plants. The first of their turbines is scheduled to arrive in Homer City this year and begin making electricity by next year.
