A run of property thefts in Indiana County continues to grow according to Indiana County’s Recorder of Deeds.
Back in December, County Recorder Maria Jack announced that scams were reported starting in the previous month where out-of-town scammers contacted local realtors saying they had land for sale. The suspects in reality had no rights to the property and were posing as owners or family members of owners and forging documents in attempts to sell the land for hundreds of thousands of dollars. In an interview on Indiana in the Morning this morning, Jack said that even though awareness has gone up about the scam, the frequency of the scams has also increased.
Local attorney Marshall Chriswell said that he has seen some of these fraudulent transaction cases come through. He says that scammers are hoping to rush people into falling for their schemes.
Jack says that people should stay with local realtors when it comes to property sales and they should also sign up for Property Alert on the Recorder of Deeds website.
