State System of Higher Education Chancellor Dan Greenstein will make his virtual spring tour of the IUP community today, and there will no doubt be some anxious questions about the future of the university and the State System as a whole after his comments two weeks ago to Senator Joe Pittman during budget talks in Harrisburg.
Greenstein told Pittman that if the finances at the state-owned universities don’t rebound by this time next year, he will request that there be legislation to dissolve the System. His remarks drew criticism from APSCUF, the union representing faculty and coaches at the fourteen schools, but agreement from many lawmakers, Pittman included, who said the financial drain on schools such as IUP which are forced to prop up other universities is too much of a burden to bear.
Expect the chancellor to speak as well on the State System’s efforts to improve diversity and combat racism, which has been a System-wide problem.
The virtual open forum today on “The Future of System Redesign” is open to the community. It will be held from 1 to 2:30 PM and there is no RSVP required. You can join the forum by logging on to the Zoom link provided in the news section at iup.edu.
