The Pennsylvania State Police continued to spread summer safety tips this afternoon by highlighting the importance of abiding laws for off-road vehicle usage.
Members of Troop A – which covers Indiana, Somerset, Westmoreland and Cambria Counties – were recently made aware that riders were attempting to register their ATVs in other states to gain exemption from ATV operation laws in Pennsylvania, however troopers say that laws regarding ATV operation in Pennsylvania are the same regardless of where one is registered.
In a news release, troopers remind riders that operating ATVs on state roadways is generally prohibited with some exceptions which are listed in Sections 7721 through 7730 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code. One exception is listed under Section 7722, where it states that ATVs may be operated on roadways designated by PennDOT or local authorities as a “snowmobile road, ATV road or both.”
Troopers add that anyone found to be operating ATVs on non-designated roadways, or under any unlawful manner, can expect appropriate action to be taken. Anyone interested in obtaining more information about owning and operating ATVs can go onto the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources website.
