Things were quiet in the Penguins’ front office yesterday after a flurry of moves on the first day of NHL free agency, but there was news from one of their biggest rivals…NHL all-time leading goal scorer Alex Ovechkin has signed a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals. It’s a team-friendly deal that pays him a million dollars in salary, plus $3.25 million in a signing bonus and a $4.75 million performance bonus if he plays ten games.
Penguins restricted free agent defenseman Alex Alexeyev has signed a one-year deal to play in the KHL in his native Russia. The Pens made him a qualifying offer but he opted to go home instead.
Another interesting trade this week…former Penguins defenseman Marcus Petterson has reunited with coach Mike Sullivan after Vancouver traded him to the Rangers for a 2030 first-round draft choice, if that pick is outside the top ten draft positions. If it’s a top ten pick, it transfers to the 2031 season and will be unprotected.
While all of the front office action has commanded attention this week, the Penguins’ prospect development camp has been rolling along. The camp ends with a tournament, scheduled at noon today at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. It is free and open to the public.
